Chapter 858
Watching how Tony clapped and cheered, Matthew couldn't bring himself to be happy.
Tony was a doctor who was great at what he did. All he wanted was to help people and save lives, yet he ended up in this situation. It was just so heartbreaking.
But Matthew forced a smile and joked, "Things will get better from here. If you're up for it, you could practice medicine all day long."
Tony laughed along. "If you count the patients I treat in my dreams, I'm practically working 24 hours."
Matthew didn't expect Tony to be so humorous, so he stuck around chatting with him and had a great time.
Tony suddenly pointed at the bookshelf. "Those medical books aren't just props, are they?"
Ansel staunchly declared, "Those are the originals. They're all one-of-a-kind."noveldrama
Tony got up and walked straight toward the bookshelf, tuning out the lively conversation. He grabbed a book and started flipping through it, acting like he had forgotten Matthew and Ansel were there.
Ansel looked at Tony's old, lonely figure and remarked, "What a fate."
Matthew understood what Ansel was hinting at and shook his head. "It's not about fate."
Ansel raised an eyebrow and asked, "Why do you say so?"
Matthew's gaze turned sharp. "There's someone behind it. It's a conspiracy. All Tony cares about is treating people and saving lives, but people manipulate public opinion and label traditional medicine as superstition.
"They even went as far as calling it a scam to make money, accusing it of hurting lives. With all the scheming going on, traditional medicine is on the decline, and Tony is just a small player caught in it."
Ansel sighed. "We do our best to be kind and work hard, but the world doesn't play by those rules. The evildoers will check out what we have, then swoop in and take a bite. Even the petty people want a piece of us. We can't be too kind."
A mix of emotions washed over Matthew. His parents had always taught him to be kind to others and be a good person. But after hearing Ansel's words, he felt that might have been wrong.
Ansel seemed to have read Matthew's mind and grinned. "Do you disagree?"
Matthew thought for a moment before replying, "It's not totally wrong. After all, nice people get taken advantage of."
Ansel shook his head. "You understand what I'm saying, and many people get it as well. But deep down, they're still kind-hearted. They just can't bring themselves
to plot or scheme against others. That's the biggest problem."
Matthew suddenly chuckled. "Do you want me to become a villain?"
Ansel was taken aback for a moment before continuing, "I'm just saying it. If you actually turn into a bad person and start scheming against everyone, I might not be able to take it. Let's drop the subject and talk about the mission."
Matthew pulled out Vital Restorative Remedies from his pocket and carefully handed it over. "I only managed to get my hands on the medical book. The Presetian Sect's legacy item is the Octolith, but that's been stolen. But the good news is I have a lead now. After I help Tony to get his medical license, I'll start searching for the Octolith."
Ansel took the medical book and skimmed through a few pages before putting it in a box. Then, he turned to Matthew and said, "The Octolith is important. There's where the best formula from the historical doctors is kept.
"The doctors passed down the formula for the future generations to make a living, so they didn't put it in the medical book. It could even be more valuable than Vital Restorative Remedies."
