Chapter 32
Laura didn’t want to forgive either party involved in the crash. They both hurt her, and she couldn’t stop thinking about how Fiona had glared at Daisy just moments ago.
Maybe she just needed to figure out how to connect the dots.
“Laura? What’s on your mind? You look pretty zoned out,” Fiona said, concern creasing her brow. She mistook Laura’s silence for lingering shock and gently patted her back. “Don’t worry, it’s all over now. I’m here. Just breathe.”
Hidden from Fiona’s view, Laura’s eyes sparkled with a hint of mischief. She had a scheme brewing. She leaned on Fiona’s shoulder, letting a few fake sobs escape her lips.
After a while, Laura “calmed down,” saying, “Mom, when those guys were chasing me, I think I heard one of them call out Daisy’s name, but I’m not sure if it was really her.”
Fiona’s eyes widened with surprise. She hadn’t considered this angle at all. While she didn’t like Daisy, she didn’t think Daisy was the kind of person to be so cruel.
“Are you certain?” Fiona asked, narrowing her eyes as she focused on Laura.
Laura noticed the doubt in Fiona’s gaze and decided to stoke the fire a bit more. “I walk that route every day, and there’s barely any traffic. By the time we finish school, most people are already off work, so it doesn’t make sense that I’d run into trouble.”
Fiona hesitated for a moment but ultimately chose to trust Laura’s words. Slowly, she forced herself to calm down.
“Do you have any proof that it was Daisy’s doing? Did you see what those guys looked like?” Fiona asked, her tone growing more serious.
As Fiona bombarded her with questions, Laura felt sweat trickling down her forehead. She realized her excuse wasn’t as polished as she’d hoped-after all, she hadn’t had much time to think it through.
And to make matters worse, Fiona was sharp as a tack. Every question she asked was important, leaving Laura anxious and a bit frustrated.
Seeing the sweat glistening on Laura’s forehead, Fiona frowned, concern written all over her face. “Are you okay? You don’t look well.”
Fiona unknowingly gave Laura the perfect excuse. After all, she had just been hit by a car, and the doctor had warned her against using her brain for too long. Doing so could cause dizziness, fatigue, and nausea.
“Mom, I feel a bit dizzy,” Laura said, squinting a little. “I remember what those thugs look like, but wouldn’t finding them be like looking for a needle in a haystack?” She glanced at Fiona, observing her reaction.
Fiona’s worried expression made Laura sigh in relief. She had gotten through that part without raising too many alarms.
“Don’t worry, sweetheart,” Fiona said, picking up a tissue to gently wipe Laura’s forehead. “You should get some rest. It’s late. I’ll call your teacher and tell her you’re not going to school tomorrow.”
Laura nodded. She settled into bed, moving over just enough to leave space beside her. “Mom, why don’t you get some rest 100?” she suggested.
Since Laura needed special care and Fiona was particular about cleanliness, they had chosen a private ward. The bed was larger than usual but still not as spacious as the one at home. It wasn’t the time to complain though. Fiona was glad to have a place to rest.
“Sure, I’ll tidy up a bit first,” Fiona replied with a smile. She went into the bathroom to wash up.
As Laura lay in bed, she started contemplating how to get Fiona to help her out. ‘Should I bribe those bullies? No, that wouldn’t work. Then she thought about Yvonne. ‘What if I told Yvonne that I tried to stand up to Daisy and got retaliated?’
An idea sparked in Laura’s mind. She quickly opened Twitter and posted about the accident she had.
Yvonne, who had been expelled and stuck at home, saw Laura’s post immediately. She flipped open their chat.
[Laura, what happened? Are you okay?] Yvonne typed furiously, her concern obvious.
Laura felt a rush of adrenaline. [I went to talk to Daisy today and asked her to give you a chance to go back to school, but then she bullied me after school,] she replied quickly.
Yvonne was the type to easily get emotional. Hearing Laura’s words made her feel a wave of gratitude. Things were going according to Laura’s plan, and they made arrangements to meet in the hospital the next day, saying they would teach Daisy a lesson.
With everything set, Laura felt pleased as she snuggled deeper into her pillows, finally dozing off with a smile. When Fiona walked out of the bathroom and saw Laura’s happy expression, she couldn’t help but feel proud of Laura’s optimism.
Yvonne was so excited that she couldn’t sleep all night. Early in the morning, she arrived at the hospital, where Fiona welcomed her in. “Yvonne, you’re so early.”
Fiona hadn’t planned on spending the night in the ward when she arrived yesterday, but Laura’s condition had worsened, which forced her to change her plan. Now that Yvonne was here, she got a chance to leave. This is property © NôvelDrama.Org.
“Go ahead and talk to Yvonne, Laura. I need to go home and get some clean clothes. I’ll be back soon,” Fiona said with concern.
Laura obediently replied, “Okay, Mom. Drive safe.”
Once Fiona left, Yvonne locked the door and turned to Laura. “So, do you have a plan? What’s our next move?” Yvonne looked really excited. She had long held a grudge against Daisy, and now the chance to get back at her was finally within reach. There was no way she’d let this opportunity slip by.
Laura shared her ideas, and as Yvonne listened, her perspective on Laura changed.
“I see what you mean,” Yvonne nodded. They talked about random stuff for a while. Then, when Fiona returned, Yvonne said her goodbyes and left.
Following Laura’s instructions, Yvonne made her way to school. She timed it perfectly, slipping in just as the bell rang for lunch. The playground was bustling with people, and Yvonne spotted Oliver shooting hoops.
This was her first time reaching out to him. She waved from a distance. When he noticed her, he dropped the ball and jogged over, looking a bit awkward.
“What are you doing here? Are you allowed to come back now?” Oliver asked, his eyes wide with surprise.
Yvonne felt a slight sting at his words and looked down. “No, I just came by to see my friends. I didn’t expect to find you here, so I thought I’d say hi.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you. Don’t take it to heart. I can be really foolish sometimes.” Oliver scratched his head. “How about we grab a drink together?”
“Sure,” Yvonne replied with a smile. Together, they walked toward the convenience store.
