Chapter 1740
Chapter 1740:
“Since you’d come, why didn’t you go inside with me? It must have been dull just waiting out here.”
While speaking, Harlee reclined in her seat, casually grabbed the drink Rhys had prepared, took a sip, and appeared pleased.
Rhys flashed a smile and said, “I originally wanted to go in, but you haven’t formally introduced me to the Swain siblings yet. Going in without that might not have been the best idea.”
Harlee was amused. After a light chuckle, she settled back, closed her eyes, looking a bit worn out, and murmured, “I’m a bit sleepy. Wake me up when we arrive.”
“Sure.”
Rhys watched her affectionately, then gently decelerated the car.
Michael returned to the Sampson family estate to find his father, Terrell Sampson, in a rage, having just slapped his mother.
“Look what your spoiled son has done! He’s about to bring ruin upon the Sampson family. He thinks he can provoke anyone from Baythorn just because I am a top official in Winbrough?” Terrell, hands on hips and far from his dignified public persona, pointed accusingly at his wife, Darlene Sampson.
“You have three days to fix this. I don’t care how. Just ensure the Sanderson family forgives us!”
Darlene, submissive and silent, knelt on the floor, not uttering a word.
“Dad, why did you hit my mom?” Michael questioned.

At the sight of Michael, Terrell grabbed a chair and raised it, ready to smash it over him.
“You troublesome brat, you actually dare to come back! I’ll beat you to death!”
Darlene stepped in front of him, begging, “I’ll handle it. Calm down, please. Michael is our only son…”
Before she could finish speaking, Michael interjected, “Mom, are you talking about begging? Has the Sanderson family pressured my dad?”
For the first time, Michael had been genuinely terrified. He collapsed to the floor, his expression blank.
Regaining his composure, Michael stood, took Darlene’s hand, and said, “Mom, I know who to ask for forgiveness. I’ll handle this. I’ll apologize to those siblings myself and keep my dad out of it!”
Before leaving, Michael said, “Mom, you shouldn’t stay with my dad just for me. You deserve better. Please, consider a divorce.”
It seemed Michael had matured suddenly. The carefree playboy was no more.
Yet, in truth, he was driven by fear. Baythorn had always seemed a remote reality compared to his untouchable status in Winbrough.
His comment about divorce wasn’t new. He had had this idea the first time he witnessed his father’s abusive behavior but had lacked the courage to say it. Today, fear had pushed him to speak.
That evening, Rhys took Harlee to a luxurious restaurant. During dinner, Virginia called, relaying that Michael was outside, kneeling and weeping, begging for forgiveness.
Harlee instructed Virginia to have Michael talk on the phone. Once he was on the line, she said, “This is your last chance. There won’t be another.”
“Thank you, Ms. Sanderson. I won’t dare to do it again,” Michael cried gratefully.
“Go back and tell your father to focus on his duties as the top official of Winbrough and never set his sights on what isn’t his.”noveldrama
After saying this, Harlee ended the call abruptly. She then turned to Rhys, who was eating with elegance, and smiled faintly, her lips curving.
“Was the incident with the Sampson family your doing? Were you using the Sanderson family’s name?”
Rhys plated some food on Harlee’s plate, his expression calm and quiet.
“Until you officially introduce me to the Swain siblings, I can’t let my identity be revealed.”
