Josephine popped her injured finger into her mouth. A heavy coppery taste burst across her

tongue instantly.

“Hey, stop slacking off! If you can keep working, then keep working! If not, get the hell out of here right now! Don’t waste everyone’s time, understand?”

The plump woman always noticed when Josephine stopped working. It was as if her eyes were constantly trained on her.

Josephine crouched on the floor, sucking her finger. She did not respond.

It was apparent that Lewis was the one who ordered the older woman to watch over Josephine. When Josephine didn’t move from her spot on the floor, the plump woman started scolding and threatening her, without putting in actual effort to yank her back to her station.

Of course, the woman would not dream of doing that.

After all, she didn’t know what rich people were up to these days. There was a chance that Josephine and Lewis got into a minor argument in the past. If she were to seriously humiliate or harm Josephine, she would be in big trouble if Josephine and Lewis made up in the future.

“Are you even listening to me? Get up and do the dishes now!”

Josephine could only purse her lips as she raised her head to look at the plump woman. Her (complexion was frighteningly pale.

Naturally, the woman was shocked. “You-”

As she stared at Josephine’s pale face, she suddenly forgot what she was going to say.

Josephine had caught her breath, so she forced herself to stand. After that, she turned around and

continued washing the dishes in the sink.

She felt quite light–headed and dizzy. Her fingers were soaked in the water, so grease and hot sauce were infiltrating her open wound, which caused her tremendous pain.

The plump woman stopped nagging her. She was afraid that Josephine might suddenly collapse lifelessly on the spot.

That was because Josephine’s complexion resembled a corpse’s.

Josephine did her best to hang on till 3 pm. There weren’t any customers in the restaurant, which gave her a chance to catch her breath once again.

The plump woman patted her arm. “Alright, that’s enough. Go have your lunch. You can finish the dishes once you’re done.”

Josephine nodded in response. She went to the dining area that was reserved for the employees. Only leftovers were on the table.

She grabbed a sandwich from the table and sank into a chair. Then, she started nibbling on the sandwich slowly.

The television fixed on the wall happened to be broadcasting the entertainment news. When

Might Be Onto Something Here

Josephine looked up, she noticed Sierra on the screen. It was a live broadcast of the Playtime

event, and Sierra happened to be hosting it.

When the camera was directed at the audience, Josephine noticed Lewis, who was sitting in the

first row.

He was in a formal suit and sat elegantly in his chair while he stared at the stage seriously. Sierra constantly made eye contact with him, which was the reason why he wore a faint smile on his

face.

The camera kept cutting back to Lewis, which was a deliberate move made by the event organizers. Their purpose was to make Lewis show up in public appearances more frequently. After all, a camera shot with Lewis in it was a lot more valuable than ten consecutive shots of the

event on the stage.

The shots on the stage were meant for the audience, whereas the shots of the audience were meant for the investors.

“Did you see the hottie sitting in the first row?”

“Yeah! Holy shit, he’s so hot!”

“Is he a celebrity? Do you know who he is?”

Many employees were standing in front of the television. Women like them tended to detect handsome guys at first glance.

The event organizers invited many celebrities to the event. That particular hottie wasn’t a ‘celebrity, yet he was able to score a central seat in the first row, which meant that he was an

extraordinary person.

“Nope. I’ve never seen him before.”

“Hey, do you think he’s the host’s boyfriend?”

“Who’s the host? Did I miss something?”

“You’ve never played Descendant of the Dragons, so it’s natural you don’t know who she is. Once you get on Twitter, you’ll hear about her. That’s Sierra Woods, and she’s posted many pictures of her boyfriend. However, none of those pictures has his face in them.”

Once that lady was done speaking, someone else pulled out their phone and started searching for Sierra’s account on Twitter. As expected, they were able to locate more information on Sierra as well as the lovey–dovey pictures she posted on her feed.

“Hold on, you might be on to something here!”

“If you cover that hottie’s head, his body is exactly the same as the one in the pictures!”

“Woah! Holy shit!”

Josephine sat in the corner silently listening to the other employees‘ chatter. The group then moved on to how Sierra and her mysterious boyfriend fell in love and how perfect they looked together.

Of course, the women also discussed how envious they were of Sierra.

Meanwhile, Josephine munched on the stale sandwich before sipping on some leftover iced tea.

She needed to hush the dishes later

A few temale employees stole a glance at her before whispering among themselves “Hey, that

new cul seems to be a mute”

“How do you know?

Annie told me.”

“Hey, they say that mutes are typically deaf as well Do you think that’s true?”

Senously? Then again, if she’s mute, she can’t have lost her hearing, right? I heard that deaf people can’t speak at all.”

Once Josephine was done with the final basket of dishes and had placed everything into the sanitizing cabinet, she turned around to see two female employees heading her way.

“Hey, can you hear us?”

“Are you deaf and mute?”

The women studied Josephine curiously. They had never met a mute person before, which

explained their curiosity. At the same time, they didn’t think that they weren’t being offensive at

all

Josephine just stared at them blankly.

“So, she can’t hear us at all.”

“What a pitiful lady.”

Josephine hated those looks. The sympathetic and pitiful looks constantly reminded her that the world saw her as incomplete.

She walked past the women and headed toward the lounge so that she could nap there.

Josephine was exhausted to the point that she could barely raise her hands.

She only managed to sleep for two hours. When 5 pm struck, it was time for her to resume work.

This time, she had to keep doing dishes from 5 pm to 11 pm

Having done countless dishes throughout the day, bits of skin had started to peel off Josephine’s fingers. Her arms were extremely sore too.

“Here’s your salary.” The plump woman handed Josephine 50 dollars. “You broke a plate, so you’re only receiving 50 dollars today. If you can’t handle the job, you don’t have to come in tomorrow.”

Josephine stared at the wrinkly 50–dollar bill for a few seconds quietly before accepting the

money.

With the bill crumpled up in her hand, she left the restaurant. There weren’t any passers–by on the dark streets.

Josephine pulled out her phone and checked her GPS app. She was 18.6 miles away from home, so the cab fare would be 80 dollars.

The money she earned for the day wasn’t enough for a cab ride home.

There was a bitter smile on Josephine’s face. Lewis seemed to keep proving to her that she

wouldn’t be able to survive after leaving him.

However, he succeeded in his mission.

Now, Josephine could only stand on the street, looking dazed and lost. She couldn’t afford a ride home, and the other forms of public transportation such as the subway and the buses were no longer operating for the night. Moreover, she didn’t dare to walk home.

She could only stand there like an idiot, not knowing where to go or what to do.

Upon realizing that she had to live like this for the rest of her life after leaving Lewis, Josephine slowly gave up on the idea of getting a divorce.

Suddenly, a car sped past her for a considerable distance before the driver slammed on the brakes abruptly. Then, the car reversed all the way back to Josephine’s side before slowing to a halt.

Josephine raised her head slightly to see the car window closest to her winding down. Seth’s face. suddenly popped into her view.

“Josephine, it’s really you. I thought I was seeing things for a second.” Right after Seth was done. speaking, he opened the car door and got out of the car. He scanned his surroundings. “Did you have dinner here?”

Josephine shook her head before signing at him in response. “I’m working here.”

Seth sounded quite surprised. “You’re working here?”

Josephine nodded, indicating that he didn’t misinterpret her sign language.

“Is Lewis coming to pick you up?”

Josephine continued to shake her head.

“Do you need me to give you a lift home?”

Josephine pursed her lips while she stared at Seth for a short while. Suddenly, she remembered what Lewis had told her, causing her to dispel the idea quickly.

Seth continued with a smile, “Get in. I’ll drive you home.”

The moment his words left his mouth, another car sped over and stopped in front of them.
