The Beauty and the Brain

Chapter 204

Chapter 204

In an instant, the three individuals left in the room were all knocked down. Dennis seized the pistol from

Marie’s grasp and pointed it at the head of the man who had been kicked down. With a resounding

bang, Dennis pulled the trigger, instantly killing him.

Marie understood that Dennis had to resort to lethal measures because the man who

had just charged at her forcefully snatched her leather jacket.

Marie picked up the leather jacket and hurriedly dragged Dennis outside, only to witness several

individuals running toward them with guns. It was most likely that

Driscoll had realized the police had arrived with Clayton and had sent them to capture

Dennis.

Considering the number of armed individuals and Dennis being wounded, Marie

understood that she could not take them on by herself. She held onto Dennis and retreated, circling the

final row of houses, leading them toward the vast wilderness of the deep mountains.

Marie dragged Dennis as they hurried inside, followed closely by the sounds of pursuit. Suddenly,

Dennis pushed Marie, causing him to lose balance momentarily. Marie swiftly steadied him, and

together they fled into the mountains.

Having successfully evaded their chasers, Marie had become disoriented within the mountainous

terrain, uncertain of the distance they had covered. The thick forest.

canopy had caused her to lose all sense of direction.

Dennis, who had been silent all along the way, finally reached his limit and fell straight to the ground.

Marie was startled and quickly squatted down to help Dennis to his feet as she urgently shouted,

“Dennis! Dennis!”

Dennis’s face was pallid, his lips drained of color, as Marie embraced him and felt the warmth in her

hands. When she lifted her hand to inspect it, she realized it was covered

in fresh blood.

Marie turned Dennis over and was met with a distressing sight. It dawned on her that he had pushed

her earlier because he had been shot in the shoulder, resulting in his back

being drenched in blood.

Marie became utterly frantic, incessantly calling out, “Dennis! Dennis!”

Dennis remained unresponsive, and if it were not for the barely audible sound of his

breath, Marie would have assumed he was dead.

The wound kept bleeding relentlessly, and it was only a matter of time before Dennis.

would succumb to excessive blood loss and die. Marie felt helpless; she gently kissed

Dennis on the forehead and whispered, “Wait here for me; I will come back to save you.”

Marie then went and gathered some branches and leaves from nearby. She then

skillfully extracted gunpowder from the bullets and, after a great deal of effort, successfully ignited a

fire.

Marie pulled a dagger from her ankle boots and heated it in the fire. Once heated, she

stuffed Dennis’s shirt into his mouth, securing it tightly. Summoning her resolve, she

swiftly slashed a cross on his shoulder, causing Dennis’s body to convulse in intense agony.

Undeterred, Marie skillfully used the blade tip to extract the bullet fragments.

Fortunately, the bullet had only struck the shoulder area near the arm, getting lodged

against the bone and not penetrating further. Otherwise, Marie would not have been

able to extract the bullet this way.

‘Marie applied the scorching blade to Dennis’s wound, which caused him to wince and awaken in pain.

His body trembled from the intense pain. In a trembling voice, Marie.

comforted him, saying, “You’re fine now; you’re fine.”

Marie was afraid, aware that such extreme pain could be unbearable for Dennis.

Nonetheless, trapped in a situation where the outcome seemed inevitable death regardless of the path

chosen, she decided to take a leap of faith.

Marie swiftly extinguished the fire pit and grabbed the shirt, tearing it into strips. With these makeshift

bandages, she wrapped them tightly around the wound on Dennis’s

shoulder, slowing down the bleeding for the time being.

Having finished these tasks, Marie was covered in sweat and completely drained. She had also been

injured and brutally assaulted by a group of men. However, she could not afford to take a break.

Even though the fire had been put out, the smoke had already wafted away, leaving them vulnerable.

Marie and Dennis would be in grave danger if they were spotted and pursued.

Marie gathered her breath and lifted Dennis onto her back, determined to keep moving

forward. Standing at a height of six feet and one inch, he seemed slender but surprisingly heavy. Even

though Marie was used to carrying heavy loads while running, it still required considerable effort to bear

his weight.

Dennis blinked his eyes drowsily, fixed his gaze on the back of Marie’s head, and murmured, “Marie.”

Marie gently tugged him upwards and whispered, “I’m here, Dennis, I’m right here.”

Dennis lost consciousness once more, and Marie, having removed his clothes, could see

the bruises and numerous wounds all over his body. With days of no food and the toll it

had taken, it was a wonder he had made it this far.

Marie could not afford to pause; she continued to move forward, unsteadily carrying Dennis on her

back. Every few steps, she made a mark on the trees with her dagger,

ensuring that if Luca and the others discovered this location, they could easily find her

by following these signs.

Brussels could get a bit humid in February, but as the sun went down, the temperature

gradually dropped, and it became slightly chilly. The temperature difference between day and night was

significant. Additionally, being in the damp forest, Marie was deeply concerned that Dennis’s wound

might get infected and inflamed.

Dennis’s consciousness was highly blurred, and he could only vaguely sense the girl in front of him, her

frail figure carrying him for a long time.

Dennis mumbled in a dazed state, “Marie, go ahead.” Copyright Nôv/el/Dra/ma.Org.

Marie took a sharp breath and scolded with annoyance, “Shut your mouth!”

She refused to leave. Where could she even go? For Marie, Dennis was her only refuge. Even if it

meant death, she was determined to die here with him.

Marie could not help but find it a bit funny. She had been left in this Brussels forest to be food for

wolves in a past life, and now she had circled back here again. Maybe it was fate, and she could not

run away from it.

However, weighing Dennis on her back, Marie pulled out her dagger and forcefully drove it into the tree

trunk, carving another distinctive mark.

Screw destiny; Marie had no intention of giving up. She was determined to have Dennis by her side, to

claim the title of Mrs. Whitney, and live a prosperous life together.

The forest was teeming with dense follage and dampness, saturating Marie’s pants. She proceeded

cautiously, placing each foot carefully. Unaware, she misstepped and plunged down, taking Dennis

along with her.

Marie clutched Dennis’s arm within a split second, not wanting him to slip away.

Despite Dennis showing no signs of being alert, he effortlessly embraced Marie as they

rolled down the slope.

With Dennis nestled in her arms, both battered by the stones, Marie shuddered at the thought of how

much pain he must be in.

Frantically scrambling to her feet, Marie was taken aback by the bloodstains on

Dennis’s face, back, and arms caused by the scraping branches. It was a chilling sight. She pulled him

up, gently tapped his cheek, and shouted, “Dennis! Dennis!”

Dennis frowned, clearly in discomfort, but he remained unconscious. There were signs of oozing blood

from his shoulder wound.

Marie hoisted him onto her back again and pressed ahead, half carrying and half

dragging him. She would not leave if Dennis could not escape the forest alive this time.

‘She had committed herself to this man.

While walking, Marie kept on ranting, “Dennis! You can’t back out after proposing! If you don’t wake up,

I’ll drag you out and throw you out on the streets; let everyone know

what a heartless scumbag you are!”

Dennis’s fingers twitched, yet he remained unresponsive. Marie continued her rant,

saying, “When we leave here, I’ll show you what an international assassin does to deal

with people like you!”

“Dennis, aren’t you a henpecked husband? If you don’t marry me, I’ll break your legs!”

“This time, no one better stops me when we got out. I’m going to give Clayton a good beating!”

“Dennis, you scumbag, all you do is sleep! I can’t carry you anymore!”

“Dennis, I’m begging you, please wake up.”

“Dennis.”

The once fearless and fierce demeanor dissolved into the girl’s desperate pleas and

helplessness. She softly repeated his name, begging for him to awaken.

Even if he jumped up right now and cursed at her, calling her a liar or a villain, anything would do as

long as he got up and talked.

However, there was no reaction from Dennis. Marie carried him for a considerable distance until she

finally spotted a dimly visible cave. Her eyes lit up, and she entered. the cave with Dennis on her back.

She found a slightly dry area, took off her leather

jacket, and spread it on the ground for Dennis to lie on.

His shoulder started to bleed again. He would lose too much blood if they did not find help soon. Marie

had to go out and look for some herbs to stop the bleeding.

She settled Dennis down and then cut several small branches with the dagger. She piled them up at

the cave entrance to prevent Dennis from being spotted. He was utterly

defenseless now.

Marie had a pistol tucked into her boots and held a knife. These were her only means of self-defense.

She wore a black fitted vest, with her arms bearing numerous scratches

from the branches. Despite that, she remained utterly vigilant, as if recalling her training from being

abandoned in the wilderness.

Marie circled outside and found several medicinal herbs for stopping bleeding. She also

picked a few fruits; although they were very sour, rubbing them on her clothes made

them somewhat edible.
