Chapter 35. Investigate
Noah POV
I watched Briana leave with suspicion and could not shake off the apprehension I saw on her face.
I have a strong feeling that Briana was not telling me the truth.
When the black SUV left, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call Brent.
“I have another task for you.” I opened it when Brent picked it up.
“Fire away.”
“Check the records of Briana’s children. They’re triplets. Briana said they are Ford’s, but I have a strong feeling they are mine.” NôvelDrama.Org copyrighted © content.
There was silence on the other end.
“What made you say they were yours?” Brent countered.
I hesitated, and Brent picked up my silence wrongly.
“As your friend, I am giving you a word of caution. Don’t look at something that was not there to avoid disappointments and heartaches later.”
“I am not.” I denied it hotly.
“What were you doing then?”
“I just have this feeling,” I admitted.
Brent became serious.
“I know you have regrets, and maybe an insane part of you wishes

the children were yours to begin again with your ex, but you have to understand. Briana is a married woman. She was not married to an ordinary man but to a Ford whose empire matches yours.” Brent was warning me of the consequences of my actions.
He had a point there. I realized even when Brent’s investigation proved the children were mine, I could t take them away from Briana and her husband.
“I know that, but this suspicion was quite unsettling. I need to know, or I might go crazy with the what if.” I told Brent honestly.
Brent sighed.
secretly grinned because I knew what the sigh meant. Brent was reconsidering.
“I am not delusional. I couldn’t shake off this feeling that I knew the triplets the first time I saw them..
“I instantly feel connected. It’s weird, but it’s the only reason I could think of right now.
“Besides, when I asked Briana about their age, she tensed. She told me they were three years old. I don’t believe her, though. Her reaction made me suspect.”
A pregnant silence followed before Brent spoke.
“Okay. Give me three hours tops.”
I ended the call and walked out to my waiting car.
“Where is Langley?” I asked Chris.
The man said he wanted to talk to me after the conference.
www.
“He went ahead,” Chris replied, and I nodded.
“Okay. Tell him to meet me at my office.” I told Chris and leaned my head back on the seat.
My eyes were closed, but my mind wandered. could remember vividly the cute faces of Briana’s triplets.
Excitement rippled in my veins at the thought that they could be mine.
The car stopped outside Hunter Enterprises. Chris and I got out of the car to walk inside.
People we met on our way greeted me. I nodded my head in acknowledgment until we reached the confines of my office.
Outside, Langley had been waiting with a folder. He was sitting in the lounge area reserved for visitors.
I beckoned him to come in. He rose to his feet and followed me.
“What do you want to talk about?” I asked Langley.
Ever since my divorce from Briana, I have tried to avoid the man. It might be because seeing him reminded me of my ex–wife’s offenses against my family. Or the bad way I treated her.
I remembered how she looked that day but ignored it because ! was selfish.
Langley handed me the folder he was carrying.
I took it to read its contents. It was a resignation letter.
I sighed. Maybe Langley feels that our relationship has never been the same since five years ago.
Still, I need to hear it straight from him.
“Why?” I asked, putting the folder aside.
Langley started to get uncomfortable. He fidgeted in his seat.
And was that bead of sweat forming on his f head?
My eyes squinted, scrapping my earlier suspicion.
“There had been missing funds in the last five years.” He told me nervously.
“And I am sure you have evidence to prove your claim and pinpoint the culprit?”
“I have evidence. It’s Mr. Bryant. The chief auditor submitted two copies of the financial report to my department. One was real; the other was forged. Mr. Bryant pressured him to do it. But his conscience had been nagging him for a while now.”
“And the reason for your resignation?”
“I failed to look out for your best interest.”
I pushed my chair and leaned back. My eyes had this calculating expression as I fixed them on Langley.
“Get me all the files, and let me ask someone to counter–check the allegations,” I told him.
“And not a word with anyone. Only you, me, and the auditor know about this.” I warned sternly.
It wouldn’t do our investigation good if Uncle Matt found out prematurely.

Mr. Langley nodded and stood up.
“And one more thing,” I said.
Langley turned his head around to look inquiringly at me.
I picked up the folder he gave me earlier and tore it in half.
“I am not approving your resignation. Stay with me, and I will reward you for your loyalty.” I told him.
