Chapter 56 The Tonic
Jack froze for a moment and opened the box, taking out the contents wrapped in vacuum bubble wrap.
He queried, “Mr. Alan, it’s a bottle of cough syrup.”
The brown medicine bottle was labeled with cough syrup, bearing the logo of the Mitchell Pharmaceutical Group, and the date of manufacture and ingredients were very clear, a product sold commercially by the Mitchell Pharmaceutical Group.
Alan’s gaze, however, sank even deeper.
Would the Mitchell family send a bottle of cough syrup to Lexie? Obviously not.
Sensing that something was wrong, Jack cautiously said, “Mr. Alan, is there something wrong with this?”
Alan looked calm, unable to see anything unusual, but ordered in a deep voice, “Have someone take it to the lab to see what the ingredients are.”
“Yes.” Jack nodded, vaguely fearing that there was something wrong with this medicine.
The car drove away from the neighborhood and drove to Howard Group.
Jack spoke about the shareholders’ meeting and reminded, “Mr. Alan, at this meeting, I’m afraid your uncle is going to have a fit over the Binjiang New Town project.”
Lennox Howard?
Alan’s face was expressionless, “With the help of the Walsh family, Uncle Lennox has more strength than before.”
“Yes, he has a lot to do with the internal problems that have arisen in this project.”
“The people involved were dealt with?”
“Kept one, as you said.”
Alan nodded slightly, “Will Tina come for this meeting?”
Tina also had shares of Howard Group in her hands.
Jack nodded, “The shareholders will all be there.”
Alan did not speak, the rearview mirror reflected his gaze, chilling.
It was said to be the day of the Howard family’s banquet, but in fact it was also the day of the annual shareholders’ meeting.
The shareholders of the Howard Group would basically be there. The Howard family was a family business, the shareholders, in addition to the Howard family, were the patriarchs who followed the Howard family back then.
“Is it reasonable for the group to invest more money in Binjiang New Town project this year than in both of last year’s big projects combined?”
At the meeting, Lennox threw a straightforward question to Alan.
Alan looked calm, “The return ratio of the Binjiang New Town project is five times that of last year’s project, which means that as long as we win this project, it’s worth the profits of all last year’s projects.”
“What about the risk? You’re not even considering it? This is a time when the industry is tightening its policies and expanding investments is simply not right.”
“Policies are made for people to see, and if we all do things as timid as you, we might as well not have to invest.”
The air in the room froze for a moment as those words fell.
Lennox’s face turned pale.
In the end, it was the other shareholders who helped communication before the meeting could continue.
When the meeting ended, Lennox coldly snorted, didn’t even glance at Alan, and left in a angry manner, while the rest of the crowd didn’t dare to say much, and one by one, they scattered.
Tina leaned sideways against the conference table and asked Alan, “Alan, in front of so many people, isn’t it a bit too much for you to disrespect my father?”
Alan glanced at her, hands folded, leaning back in his chair, “Not everyone relies on respect in business. Uncle Lennox does respect the Walsh family, but unfortunately his methods won’t work with me.”
Tina blushed, “You’re taunting me?”
Lennox took his daughter to marry the Walsh family for the sake of business, which seemed to outsiders to be the norm of the gentry, commonplace, but in Tina’s eyes it was a great humiliation.
“It’s to remind you,” Alan’s eyes sank slightly as he said coldly, “to clean up your own mess and not to anger innocent people.”
“Innocent people? Who?” The corner of Tina’s lips lifted in a sneer, “Lexie? That mute?”
The word ‘mute’ fell on his ears, inexplicably harsh, and a hint of displeasure surfaced in Alan’s eyes.
Tina turned around and pressed her hands on the conference table, her face mocking, “I’m kindly reminding you to keep that mute in check, and also, don’t always be defending against your own family. Her first love can pop up today, maybe tomorrow she’ll have a child with someone else, and you’ll be a father to someone’s child.”
Alan straightened up without changing his face, his voice low, “You think everyone is like you?”
Tina’s face changed.
Alan stood up from his chair, fastened the buttons of his suit, and said carelessly, “If you pick a fight again, I won’t mind giving the Walsh family an address, and I think Bob will be happy to deal with him personally.”
“Don’t you dare!” Tina gritted her teeth, “My marriage to the Walsh family was set by grandfather himself! How dare you stir it up?”
“What do you think?”
His voice was cold and loud.
Tina, however, winced in her heart.
She knew that Alan would do anything.
“So protective of her, and threatening me over her! Do you really like that mute?”
Alan walked to the door and heard Tina’s exasperated questioning from behind him, his dark pupils suddenly contracted.
Tina added, “Do you really think she’s really such a peaceful person on the surface? Do you know who she’s been seeing and what she is doing behind your back?”
“Mind your own business.”
Dropping these words, Alan strode out of the conference room.
Jack had been standing guard at the door and was frightened by the sight of Alan’s frosty face as he came out.
“Mr. Alan, go straight to the resort or …”
Alan sulked, “What has Lexie been up to lately?”
“Miss Mitchell has been commuting normally.”
“And today?”
Jack was nervous, people did not follower her on the weekend.
Thinking of what Lexie said last night, Alan’s gaze sank slightly, “Her grandma has been out of the hospital for so long, have someone send some tonic over.”
Jack froze, “Now?”
“Now.”
The icy tone made Jack jolt, “Okay.”
As night falls, the street lights come on gradually.
The taxi stopped in front of the Howard’s villa, and after Lexie paid, she stood at the door and looked towards the upper floor, just in time to see the light on through the window of the study on the second floor.
Alan had returned.
As soon as she entered the living room, Marry said grimly, “Mrs. Howard, can you tell me in advance the next time you come back so late, should I send this tea up to the Mr. Alan or not?”
Lexie tucked the corners of her mouth, showing a hint of apologies, and then put her things down to make tea.
Alan had been waiting for her in the study for a long time.
“Come in.”
She opened the door and went in to see Alan’s usual calm face.
Lexie walked over with tea.
“Where have you been today?”
Alan’s voice was sullen.
Lexie carefully put down the tea set.
[I told you yesterday that I went to Grandma’s house.]
“How is she?”
[Pretty good.]
“Is that so?” Alan looked up, “Have she had the tonic I had sent over?”
Lexie looked up at the man in dismay.
