Gud Wife 10
"Maximus, what are you doing sitting here? Why don't you go in and see your wife?" Catherine said, snapping him out of the many memories that were circling in his mind.
Internally, Catherine still hoped her grandson and Mary would continue their marriage, so she clung to the hope that Maximus would begin to treat Mary with more love and respect. If that happened, she wouldn't have any excuse to want a divorce. What Catherine didn't foresee was that Mary was not going to change her mind. The fear she had felt seeing her future and that of her little daughter left no doubt that divorce was the best thing she could do.
Maximus remained seated in the hospital room's waiting area. His grandmother, exasperated, gave him a piercing look and whispered to him:
"Maximus, if you keep this up, you'll lose the girl who's cared about you the most. Do you think your lover will look after you the way Mary has?"
"Grandma, I don't think it's relevant to discuss my relationship with Alexia right now."
"Relationship? What relationship? All you do with that woman is fuck in your office. According to you, she's a very capable woman, but she's only earned her position with her body."
"Grandma!" Maximus replied angrily.
Catherine was about to continue lecturing Maximus when they heard two knocks on the door. Knock, knock.
"Come in, please!" Catherine responded.
"Ma'am, I've come to check on the patient. I know she hasn't woken up yet, but it's important to assess her progress.
"Doctor, Mary has just woken up a few minutes ago."
"Why didn't anyone notify the hospital staff?"
"I'm sorry, I was so happy that she woke up that I didn't think it was necessary. But we were about to inform you.
"Okay, but next time, I'd prefer to be notified as soon as something happens."
"Don't worry, doc. It won't happen again. My grandmother is tired. I'll send her home, and I'll take care of my wife now," Maximus said in a calm voice.
"The most important thing is to know how the patient is doing, so I'll go check on her."
Mary was lost in her thoughts when she saw the door open. A very handsome man in a white coat walked Jn.
"Miss Preston, I'm glad to see you're awake! How are you feeling? The head of the night-shift determined you were out of danger and could be moved to a more comfortable room."
"I'm fine! My arms hurt, maybe because the bandages are too tight."
"They have to be. We need the blood to circulate properly. What happened wasn't trivial; we had to 1/2
perform a blood transfusion to revive you. It's been several days. I'm going to check the bandages." was Maximus. His face showed
As the doctor leaned over, he noticed a man standing in the doorway. Inoveldrama
concern and exhaustion.
"Miss Preston!"
"Mrs. Palmer!" came a voice from behind. "Her last name is Palmer," Maximus corrected the doctor. "You're right! Mr. Palmer, it's just that her ID still has her maiden name. When they brought her here, we looked for ID, and that was the only one we found."
Maximus couldn't help but remember the countless times Mary had asked him to take her to get a new ID with her married name. She had been excited just at the thought that something of hers would carry her husband's last name. He had never had the time or the intention to take her, so now, indeed, she only had an ID with her maiden name. The only evidence of their marriage was the marriage certificate, folded and tucked away in some drawer in his study. She wanted something that would give her a sense of belonging to her new status, but she never got it.
