Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire

Chapter 175

As his voice faded, he flicked on all the lights in the room. Selena glanced over, feeling her heart, which had been pounding in her throat, gradually calm down. She'd thought it was Kent again...

Lost in her thoughts, she didn't notice Everett until he was right in front of her. He grabbed her face with one hand, his dark eyes icy as he demanded once more, "Why'd you suddenly show up here?"

He wasn't being gentle. Selena winced at the pain and tried to pull away, but he wouldn't let go. "Answer me!"

Selena was baffled by his sudden outburst. Clenching her teeth, she replied slowly and deliberately, "I'm here for work."NôvelDrama.Org: owner of this content.

Work?

Everett didn't bother to hide his scorn and disbelief. "You are used to living in luxury. What work could you possibly have? What can you do? What skills do you have? Selena, if you're going to lie, at least make it believable!"

Selena understood Everett had never really known her, but even after three years of marriage, it still stung that he didn't know she had been a journalist who'd published significant news reports.

Her heart ached with a familiar pang.

Her hands curled slightly at her sides. Selena met his cold gaze, offering no explanation, but instead replied with a touch of sarcasm, "Mr. Bennett, what have I done now to make you so angry that you'd travel all this way just to confront me in my hotel room?" "You really don't know?"

Everett's anger flared even more. He pulled a stack of photos from his pocket and flung them at her face.

Instinctively, Selena blinked, and the photos scattered all over the floor.

Looking down, she saw they were snapshots of her and Dr. Campbell in what appeared to be an embrace at the hospital.

In truth, Dr. Campbell had only pulled her close to protect her, and she had been too dazed to move. They bad separated almost instantly, and it was hardly an embrace.

She crouched down, picking up one of the photos. The photographer had skillfully captured angles and

moments that made each photon et

look intimate and tender as if surrounded by a haze of romantic tension.

Such shots didn't happen by accident, unless...

She was incredulous. "Everett, did you have someone spy on me?"

Those photos were snapped by paparazzi who'd contacted Derick, who then arranged to buy them. But Everett, burning with rage, wasn't about to explain.

"If you don't want people to know, don't do it!" Everett spat the words through clenched teeth.

Selena stared at Everett, her eyes full of disappointment, sadness, and growing anger.

She had just survived a near-death experience, her limbs still weak, only to return to his distrust and unfounded accusations.

She was tired of explaining herself to someone who obviously didn't care.

However, this involved Dr. Campbell's reputation, too, and she couldn't let Everett wrong him as he had wronged her.

"Everett, listen up. I'll say it one last

time: there's nothing improper between Dr. Campbell and me. We're just friends. There's a reason for those photos, but it's not what you think. We've got nothing to hide, So go ahead and investigate!"

Her dark eyes locked onto his, each word firm and unwavering.

Everett's lips were tightly pressed together, watching her silently, unsure whether to believe her or not.

The room's atmosphere turned almost suffocating.

Everett wasn't a fool. Selena's confident retort suggested that, indeed, nothing had happened.
