Chapter 157
Bryan was always a bit of a loose cannon, drifting through life with no real direction. Getting into fights was just another Tuesday for him, and he was no stranger to the inside of a police station. A few days behind bars? No big deal. He'd be out soon enough, ready to cause more trouble. When it came to a girl who seemed frail, he didn't think twice about the law. To him, a good roughing-up would do the trick.
He knew all about the Bennett Corporation's clout, and Everett was a name that carried weight. Their reach in Newport was both deep and wide, cutting across both legal and illegal realms. Folks from every walk of life knew not to cross the Bennett family. So, he did pause for a second.
Kaylee noticed her husband's hesitance and saw it for what it was-fear. But her fierce protective instincts for her daughter overrode everything else.
She stepped up, hands on her hips, and spat insults at Selena. "You shameless hussy, who do you think you're scaring? Claire's already spilled the beans about how you threw yourself at Mr. Bennett. He's got no interest in you, so a cast-off like you daring to make a scene here is downright hilarious!
"Mr. Bennett's got himself a pianist mistress on the side. Who do you think you are? Even if you dropped dead right here, he wouldn't give a damn!"
She turned to Bryan, "Go on, honey, give her what she deserves, for Lydia!"
Bryan's anger flared even hotter. He was almost buying into Selena's taunts. He glared at Selena with pure malice.NôvelDrama.Org owns this text.
Selena was shocked at their blatant disregard for the law, and even more so that Claire would stand by and let it happen. The disappointment cut deep. They had lived under the same roof for years, after all... Without a second thought, Selena bolted for the door.
Thankfully, she had planned ahead. On her way over, she had told Joy to call the police if she wasn't back in half an hour. Now, she just needed to stall until help arrived.
"Get her!" Bryan shouted, and two other men lunged at her. She dodged them a few times, but outmanned and not at her best, they managed to pin her down.
"Let's see how you gonna run now!" Bryan sneered, yanking her hair and forcing her to look up. "Think you're tough, huh? Little brat, you really think can't put you in your place?"

The pain made Selena wince, and she caught sight of her aunt lounging on the sofa, sipping tea like it was the evening news.
Despite it all, Selena refused to give in, her lips curling into a defiant smile.
Bryan felt his ego bruised. Claire had
told him this niece of hers had no heart, so he figured he could do whatever he wanted. At most, it would be seen as a family business, a mere domestic spat.
He grabbed an empty cup from the table, raised it high, and aimed for Selena's head.
Just then, his hand was stopped mid-swing, followed by a swift kick that sent him crashing to the floor. He groaned in pain like he'd been hit by a truck.
Selena let out a breath of relief. She thought she was going to get hurt this time. Thank god the police had arrived just in time.
But when she looked up, her eyes widened.
It wasn't the police standing there-it was Everett!
He's clad in black from head to toe, his face darkened with shadows. He radiated an aura of danger, like a warrior stepping out from the abyss.
Everett's gaze swept over the men holding Selena. Seeing Bryan's sorry state was enough to make them release her in an instant.
