Chapter 72
It was all for Lola’s sake.

“Both of you have valid points, but Layla should be a part of the Jensen family rightfully. However, if we don’t get married, Layla won’t be able to stay with me. But others won’t understand this. They’ll only see Layla staying with her parents as if the Jensen family doesn’t want
her anymore. Then they’ll gossip about Layla, and she won’t be able to handle it.”
Scott’s argument was flawless. Even Mason couldn’t find an excuse to refusê.
“I must thank you for considering Layla so much, Scott,” Ethan said.
Just when they didn’t know what decision to make, Ethan appeared at the door.
“You’re back. Weren’t you just admiring the flowers?” Scott saw Ethan’s eyes and then looked away.
Ethan walked in calmly and sat closest to Scott.
“Of course, I had to come back. If I didn’t, my sister would’ve been married off to you by now, wouldn’t she?” Ethan’s voice was low, but the
sharpness was evident.
Scott frowned slightly. This matter was almost settled, but Ethan had to return at this moment!
After a few seconds to compose himself, Scott smiled, “We were meant to be family sooner or later. There’s no need for such hostility, is
there?”
Ethan squinted slightly. “You misunderstand. I only want what’s best for my sister. As I’ve said before, until Jenna is found or until you divorce, you can’t do anything to Layla besides being friends.
“Not only is this unfair to Layla but…”
Ethan snorted, his tone carrying a hint of sarcasm, “You’re worried about Layla being unable to handle public opinion. Have you considered what would happen if Jenna came back one day and accused Layla of being a homewrecker? Can Layla handle that?
“Scott, good things take time. The more rushed you are, the more mistakes you make. Haven’t you heard that saying?”
Scott’s eyes widened suddenly! This text is © NôvelDrama/.Org.
He thought Ethan indeed had skills. These years outside had changed him significantly.
Seeing that this matter couldn’t continue as it was, Scott decided to temporarily set it aside to avoid making things worse.
“You’re right. I haven’t been thoughtful enough. I wonder if you have time now. I need to consult you on something,” Scott said with a meaningful look.
Ethan wasn’t afraid of anything and also wanted to take the opportunity to know Scott better. He agreed to have a private chat.
“I have time. The scenery in my garden is quite nice. Care to join me?”
“Of course. I’ve been thinking of sending Layla different flowers every day lately, and it’s good to know more about flowers.”

Both of them didn’t speak too explicitly, but they understood the underlying meaning behind each other’s words.
“Huh? I just saw Ethan come back. Where is he? Did Scott leave?” Lola put down the freshly squeezed orange juice and looked around.

“They seem to have gone to discuss something about flowers. I don’t understand why they’re so idle,” Jasmine said, taking a sip of orange juice.
Lola looked down slightly. Somehow, when flowers were mentioned, she couldn’t help but think of the man standing in the flowers.

“Ethan, tell me the truth. Is what you’re doing related to Dominick?”
Just as
they arrived at the garden, Scott couldn’t help but ask.
Ethan furrowed his brows slightly. “I don’t understand what you mean.
“Also, we’re not that close. Just call me Mr. Lewis.”
Scott showed a hint of sarcasm at Ethan’s words as if he had seen through everything.
“Fine, Mr. Lewis.
“Honestly, do you have any ulterior motives for not letting Layla and me get engaged?
“Don’t you want your best buddy to be with Layla? Do you really think you’re hiding it well?”
Scott’s face bore a fierce expression, starkly contrasting his usual mild demeanor.
“Ethan, have you forgotten how he hurt Layla before? Are you trying to harm your sister?”
Ethan paused for a moment, not even sure what he was thinking.
After a brief moment of confusion, he regained his indifferent demeanor.
“How could you think that? I’ve always had Layla’s best interests at heart. Oh, by the way, just because you saved Layla doesn’t mean you can
decide her life!
“When it comes to things I disagree with, I will still disagree. Layla’s life, she should choose for herself!”
Scott wasn’t about to back down either, leaving with a sharp remark.
“Just make sure you’re prepared for the consequences of Layla being with your buddy after.”
‘Buddy?‘
He thought describing their relationship with such a term did sound a bit odd.
“What are you two talking about? Why would I…be with him?”
Lola’s voice came from outside the garden, catching them off guard, and they hurriedly went to greet her.

“Layla, when did you arrive? Did you…hear everything?” Ethan asked tentatively.
Lola could tell from their expressions that something was off, and she felt a bit regretful that she hadn’t waited to hear them out before coming out.
“It’s nothing. I just heard you saying something about me being with Ethan’s buddy.
“Why would I be with him? We’ve only met a couple of times, had very few conversations… or maybe we know each other?”
Lola was increasingly feeling like her fainting wasn’t just due to her health issues.
She remembered how she instinctively used her phone after getting it back.
But Scott wouldn’t deceive her, and neither would her family.
So Lola dismissed the thought.
However, hearing their conversation just now made her feel that something was fishy.
Fearful that Lola might find out something, Scott quickly came up with an excuse.
“We were just joking, Layla. I felt jealous seeing you with that man today, so I was a bit upset. What I said earlier was just out of anger. Don’t take it seriously.”
“Right? What I said earlier was just a joke, right?” Scott looked at Ethan with a complex look.
He was implying that the consequences of not cooperating would be unbearable.
“Yeah, just joking.”
Lola glanced at their faces, noticing something amiss, but she didn’t press further, only having doubt in her mind.
“I’ll go back now since there’s nothing else. Layla, rest well. I will come by tomorrow.” Scott ruffled Lola’s hair before bidding goodbye.
