Chapter 275
Chapter 275
Sanderson was cut mid-sentence, his brows furrowing as he turned towards her.
Kermit scolded even more harshly, "What now? When did it become your turn to interrupt adults talking? You're really asking for it!"
After saying that, he looked at Lorna and Sanderson, "Big bro, sis, you really need to teach her some manners. Otherwise, it's our name, the Delaney name, that she's dragging through the mud!"
Indeed, Cordelia frequently interrupting the elders was impolite.
But Lorna knew that Cordelia was just overly concerned.
And as for Sanderson, his heart only warmed at her concern; how could he be upset with her?
He looked at Cordelia gently and said, "Lia, let it go."
But Cordelia turned to Dagmar, "This isn't as simple as you think, she's the problem!"
That statement made Dagmar's pupils shrink.
But having navigated the corporate battlefield for years, she had mastered the art of keeping her emotions under wraps. She put on a wronged expression, "Miss, you, you..."
After she finished, she looked at Sanderson and Kermit, "Right, it's all my fault, for not sealing the deal. This has nothing to do with Mr. Delaney!" Before Sanderson could respond, Kermit sneered, "What? Now planning to throw an assistant under the bus? Big brother, that's hardly honorable! We Delaneys, we own up to our actions. Hiding behind an assistant, what kind of man does that?"
Kermit then turned to Steward, "Dad, you see? This is the kind of man who pushes everything onto others, no accountability. Is this really chairman material? No wonder the company's performance has been tanking since he took over."
He tilted his chin up slightly, "Besides, bro, you made a promise that if the deal fell through, you'd resign. Going back on your word now?"
Upon hearing this, Dagmar started to feign innocence, "Mr. Delaney, don't say that, it's all my fault! Should I resign right away?"
Sanderson immediately defended her, “No! This has nothing to do with Dagmar."
He looked at Dagmar, "I'm not the kind to let my subordinates take the fall. Even though we don't yet know what exactly went wrong, I'll take full responsibility."
Sanderson was always a man of integrity.
Dagmar felt a twinge of guilt at his words but quickly steeled her heart, remaining silent.
Cordelia was watching her intently.
If she had a boss like her father, she would never betray him out of conscience. Dagmar was just too wicked.
She straightforwardly spoke up, "Her translation was off."
That statement visibly shook Dagmar.
Sanderson was stunned, "What?"
Then it dawned on him, "You know Italian?"
He couldn't recall his daughter learning that, and surely kindergarten would at most teach English, not Italian, right?
Cordelia shook her head adorably, "No."
But now, she had something new to learn!
Dagmar internally sighed in relief at Cordelia's admission of not knowing Italian.
But Sanderson smiled, "If you don't know it, how do you know Dagmar's translation was off?"
He had always trusted his associates fully, making betrayal a rarity. Dagmar had been with him for many years, and he wasn't about to start doubting her without cause.
But Cordelia was his daughter, and he wouldn't dismiss her concerns outright. So, he listened attentively.
Dagmar played the innocent card even harder, “Miss, I'm fluent in eight languages. Are you doubting my Italian? I can have Mr. Steve vouch for me!”
She turned to Steve, who had been stopped by Cordelia from leaving, and asked in Italian, "Mr. Steve, what do you think of my Italian? Could you answer in simple English, please?"
Steve gave a thumbs-up, “Outstanding!”
Dagmar then looked at Cordelia,
"Miss, do you believe me now? And this isn't my first time dealing with Italians, Øve been with Mr. Delaney on all those meetings. We've dealt with the French, Japanese, Koreans... You can trust my professional skills."
Sanderson nodded in agreement.
ло
Kermit mocked, "Dagmar is big brother's person. Do you think by pinning this on her, you can get away with it? And what a ridiculous excuse!"
Rachel chimed in, “Lia, no offense, but if you don't understand business, better not to speak. Trying to find excuses for your dad and blaming it on Dagmar's translation? That's just ignorant. Good thing this is just within family walls; otherwise, it'd be embarrassing!"
As they berated Cordelia, Sanderson wouldn't have it, "So, you were born business experts? Since when can't family speak their mind? Lia, why do you think Dagmar's translation was off?"
Cordelia lowered her gaze and slowly began, "I asked her to translate a couple of sentences just now."
Just as Dagmar was about to retort, Cordelia suddenly spoke, perfectly replicating the Italian phrases Dagmar had used earlier, with the same tone and inflection!
Dagmar was stunned.
After Cordelia finished, she slowly asked, "In my sentences, the word 'problem' was present. Why then, in your translations, was it never mentioned?" Dagmar was left speechless, her eyes wide with disbelief.
How could she? How could she remember such a complex language after hearing it just once?
But she couldn't admit it. She absolutely couldn't.
Dagmar's mind worked at lightning
speed, and in no time, a smile was back on her face. "Miss, the words we use change depending on the
context. I'm sure you've noticed
learning English, like 'I' becomes 'am, and 'you' turns into 'are Even though in translation to Chinese, it's all 'is', English doesn't play by the same rules."
"Is that so?"
Cordelia knew she was being fed a line but couldn't come up with the proof on the spot.
Italian wasn't common, and few people mastered it...
With her brows furrowed, Cordelia was about to retort when Rachel and Kermit burst into laughter. "And here we thought you were something special. If you can't speak Italian, then stop causing a fuss."
Kermit then turned to Sanderson, "Big bro, let's not waste time on this pointless debate. What's it going to be about the CEO position? Are you in or
out?"
Cordelia was deep in thought, trying to piece everything together when suddenly a deep voice cut through the tension.
She turned sharply to see Everard walking toward them slowly. He spoke a string of fluent words that, though incomprehensible to her, bore a striking resemblance to the language Dagmar had just attempted—Italian! All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.
Everard could speak Italian, and fluently at that!
