Chapter 079 Absolute Step
The O-line was about as sturdy as wet tissue paper, man. Von just did a little shimmy and spin, and boom, he was through in a heartbeat, barreling towards Luke like a freight train. Luke didn't even get a chance to blink, let alone check out his receivers.
"Goddamn it!" Luke jumped up, yelling at the O-line, "What is this, a revolving door? Even a brothel's got more structure! This is rookie camp, show some damn skills! Now's the time, no more screwing around!"
Even without Luke's outburst, the three linemen were already feeling like crap. This was their job, and they were blowing it. Humiliation mixed with anger, and they were fuming. "Move your asses! Use your legs! Get moving, get moving!" Clint shouted, his face red as a tomato, but after yelling, he awkwardly looked away, sulking.
Luke took a deep breath and calmed down. "Alright, huddle up, we need to focus on the second down." As the QB, he had to keep his cool and control the situation. "We still got nine chances! If you don't wanna be the laughingstock, don't waste any of 'em!"
He pushed all the extra crap out of his mind, focusing on one down at a time. Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate!
Looking at the three linemen in front of him, he didn't know them well. Trusting them was tough in this unfamiliar setup. "Guys, this is your stage. Follow your rhythm, use your judgment, and give it your all!" In a pinch, you gotta improvise. "Watch out, Von's the key. The other three defenders are off rhythm. A simple screen pass to shift their focus, then complete the pass!"
A screen pass uses the QB as bait, drawing defenders away. The O-line protects the receiver, who breaks through after catching the ball. Quick, short passes to tear through the defense-that's the plan.
After a quick huddle, Luke looked at his temporary teammates and said, "Let's put on a show!"
The seven players got back in position. Luke, with a clear mind, stood on the field, blocking out all distractions, fully focused. The opposing defense had no real plan, all eyes were on Von. That's the thing with star players they can make or break the game. Break through this key point, and the whole defense crumbles.
Luke replayed the first offensive play in his head, recalling Von's blitz pattern, thinking about his escape route.
"Go!"
Luke gave the command, and center Brandon snapped the ball. Luke reached out, but the snap was too high!
The snap and catch are the basics, but they're crucial. Any little screw-up can lead to a fumble, and the down's a bust.
This was only Luke and Brandon's second time working together. Brandon's snap was high, hitting the gap between Luke's wrists. Luke reacted fast, pulling his hands together to catch it, but it was wobbly, slowing down his backpedal. Priority one: control the ball!
Damn it!
Luke adjusted his steps, gripping the ball tight, barely managing to control it. His peripheral vision kept tabs on the field. One snap error, and the screen pass plan was toast. But the three linemen finally got their act together, using cross-blocking to stop Von's blitz and the other two rushers. Only one defender took a wide loop, charging at Luke.
If it weren't for the snap error...
But Luke's mind was clear-no hesitation, no regret. After controlling the ball, the slight time difference was enough for Von to break through. Gotta admit, Von's blitz was like a freight train, pure power. Then Luke saw Von sprinting towards him like a lightning bolt.
Luke and Justin were both top-notch defensive players, but Justin wasn't as fast. His size and footwork gave his blitz the momentum of a charging bull; Von's speed, though, was like a dagger slicing through the line. Different styles, same threat. Honestly, Von was even better!
Seeing Von about to pounce, but with a bit of space between them, Luke's mind screamed, "Absolute Step!" Now was the perfect time to bust out his special move!noveldrama
No hesitation, the moment his brain kicked into gear, his body followed suit.
In the first second, he felt light and powerful, like a cheetah ready to pounce. His steps were quick and precise, moving with the grace of a dancer. One sidestep dodged the defender who slipped through earlier; another sidestep avoided Von's determined tackle, but it wasn't over yet.
In the second second, Luke weaved around the O-line and the other two rushing defenders. He felt invincible, effortlessly slipping through the defense. His vision was crystal clear, spotting Logan, Julio, and Jeremy.
The screen pass plan was shot, but the three receivers kept running their routes. In those two seconds, they had moved out of the short pass zone and into mid-pass territory, even pushing towards the long pass area.
Julio, Luke zeroed in on Julio's position and surroundings.
Julio was around the thirty-yard mark, still moving forward. Not far away, Richard was waiting, arms spread, ready to pounce.
There was a five-yard gap between Julio and Richard, a gap that could close any second. But Julio had the size advantage. Perfect opportunity!
In the third second, Luke took a quick step forward, swung his arm, and launched a bullet pass. The ball zipped through the air with a whoosh. The pass wasn't aimed at Julio's current spot but right in front of him, intersecting with Richard's defensive route, giving Richard a chance!
Richard lunged, trying to intercept or disrupt the pass. In a split second, Julio arrived, shoulder-checking Richard while snatching the football right in front of him. Julio secured the ball, and then he and Richard collided hard, with Julio's size giving him the edge. Both hit the ground, tangled together.
Absolute Step skill, cooling down.
The coaches and scouts around the field were stunned. Facing a bad snap, Luke stayed cool, using slick footwork to escape the pocket and find an opening, nailing the pass. In the duel between Julio and Richard, he got the ball to Julio.
Twenty-three yards, a twenty-three-yard long pass!
Once again, Luke nailed a brilliant long pass in live play, especially under constant pressure from the defenders. It was impressive!
Thrilling, absolutely thrilling. Luke's heart was pounding. That pass was like walking a tightrope; it could've been Julio making the catch or Richard snagging the interception. But Luke bet right!
He gauged Julio's momentum and controlled his pass to be as close to Julio as possible. It wasn't easy, and after releasing the ball, he clenched his teeth, watching anxiously until Julio made the catch. Finally, he exhaled a long breath.
But now wasn't the time to celebrate. Luke didn't get too excited; instead, he got even calmer, calling out to his teammates, "Move forward, quick, move quickly!" No-huddle offense was his jam, and today he was gonna shine.
Absolute Step, truly extraordinary. Those three seconds of feeling unstoppable surged through Luke's veins! Now the question was, he had one more use of his special skill left, and he had to use it wisely!
The seven offensive players quickly lined up, while the seven defensive players were still bickering. Seeing their opponents' actions, they cursed and scrambled to reassemble. But Luke wasn't giving them any time to breathe, pressing the advantage!
