Chapter 1025
Evadne's eyes shimmered with tears, her whole body jolting in shock.
She looked down, staring blankly at her empty hands.
Once, every precious moment had started with Thaddeus reaching out to hold her. When they kissed, cuddled, or intertwined their fingers, he'd whisper promises in her ear-promises that no matter what happened, he'd never let go.
But now, his hand slipped coldly from hers, leaving nothing behind.
In that split second, pain sliced through Evadne, sharp as if her very bones were being torn from her flesh.
Gordon, standing nearby, looked utterly stunned-his face drained white.
No one knew better than him just how much Thaddeus had loved Evadne before the accident. They'd been inseparable. But now, after waking from his coma, Thaddeus hadn't lost his memory, yet it was as if he'd become a different person. He was distant with everyone: Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Frederic, and worst of all, with the woman he once loved so fiercely.
"Grandpa, Dad."
Thaddeus finally broke the silence, shifting his gaze from Evadne's devastated eyes. His voice was low and flat. "I'm tired. I need to rest. Can you leave me alone for a while?"
Frederic froze, caught off guard.
His youngest had always been reserved—not like his older brother, who was charming and endlessly diplomatic. Thaddeus had always kept his feelings close, never letting his emotions show.
But since he'd woken up, it was like something inside him had frozen solid.
Frederic could only nod, trying to keep his voice steady. "Of course, son. You rest up, and we'll come back to see you when you wake."
Thaddeus didn't answer. He simply lay down, turning his back to everyone. Shutting them all out.
Including Evadne.
After leaving the hospital room, Evadne ran, half-mad with grief, straight to Dr. Chasel Bright's office.
Frederic had forbidden visitors from the Ashbourne family, but Dr. Bright was world-renowned in neurology, and the Abernathy family had insisted he continue Thaddeus's treatment.
"Chasel... why? Why is Thaddeus like this now?!"
Evadne could barely get the words out, choking on her sobs. "He hasn't forgotten me he remembers everything-but he's like a stranger. What happened to him?!"
Chasel studied the latest brain scans, his brow furrowed deeply.
"Thaddeus suffered severe damage to his amygdala-the part of the brain that controls emotions. That's why he's so detached from everyone. It's like his emotional signals have been cut off, like a cell phone with no reception. He's locked away inside himself, unable to connect."
Evadne's mind reeled, bombarded by this fresh wave of heartbreak. She trembled, barely able to speak.noveldrama
"Will... will he ever be able to live a normal life?"
"For the most part, yes," Chasel replied gently. "He can work, probably even more efficiently than before he won't be distracted by emotions. He'll be focused, almost machine-like."
He couldn't bring himself to look at her, staring instead at the scans in his hands. "But he's lost the ability to love or care for anyone."
Evadne's heart twisted painfully. "What do you mean?"
"He'll never love again. Emotionally, he's alone in his own world. To him, family, friends, even you... you're just people. You're not special anymore."
"That can't be... He remembers me, he remembers everything we went through!" Evadne's voice was hoarse, raw with desperation.
"But memories aren't enough, Evadne. He might remember you loved each other, but he can't feel it anymore."
Chasel finally looked at her, his voice gentle but unflinching. "Memories are just memories. To someone with emotional impairment, they're weightless."
He couldn't lie to her. Sometimes the truth, however painful, was kinder in the long run.
But Evadne wasn't ready to give up. Through her tears, she pleaded, "Isn't there anything we can do? There has to be a way to bring his emotions back!"
"I'll try hypnotherapy as a next step, but there's only a fifty-fifty chance it'll work. And we have to be careful-if we push too hard, he could have a mental breakdown.
"There's also electroconvulsive therapy. Sometimes, a strong electric shock can stimulate emotional response."
Evadne shook her head fiercely, eyes squeezed shut against the thought.
"No... I've read a about that. It's brutal-both physically and mentally. He had depression as a child, and after he came back from the Army, he went through it once already. I can't let Thaddeus suffer through that again..."
Chasel paused, then his eyes lit up with a sliver of hope. "Well, sometimes, a person's emotions can be triggered by an extreme. shock intense anger, heartbreak, trauma. It might force his emotions back to the surface."
It was an option. But how could they make that happen?
"Evadne, I'm not telling you this to hurt you-I just want you to be prepared for anything."
Chasel stood and gave her a gentle hug. "You're the bravest woman I know. Take care of yourself and take things one step at a time. Thaddeus may still come back to you."
When she left Chasel's office, Evadne wandered the hospital corridors, feeling hollow, like a soul separated from her body. She didn't know where to go.
Eventually she drifted out to a balcony, gazing up at the starless black sky. Memories of Thaddeus flooded her mind-the sweetness of their love, every shared laugh, every embrace.
The deeper they had loved, the harsher the pain.
She'd tried so hard to hold it together, to be strong. But now, alone, her
heartbreak overwhelmed her.
She covered her face with her hands and sobbed.
Suddenly, she felt a gentle touch on her arm.
Startled, she wiped away her tears and looked down.
A slender, elegant hand offered her a clean handkerchief.
"Ms. Evadne, don't cry. You'll hurt your eyes."
Chad Abernathy sat nearby in his wheelchair, his gentle, refined features softened
by a reassuring smile. He offered comfort in a quiet, steady voice.
What do you think?
