The beggar with a necklace
True to her words, the sickness was terminated a few days later after she gave Jobert the medicine she had created. Carlos informed her that Jobert had the solid trash collected by the river and buried at the base of the mountain. The governor has also restricted water extraction from the river near the factory for a year.
People grumbled, so Jobert erected a large tank in which they could get water. The water in the tank originates from a spring that connects to the river. Jobert’s office has not received any complaints since then.
“What about his wife?” she inquired, smearing crimson lipstick across her lips.
Carlos closed his eyes and glanced at her lips. “Still recovering in the hospital. Regarding Yvette and Jobert, the two have been at odds for a few days because of the issue at the factory that Jobert wanted to close for a while but Yvette’s family did not agree. Until now the two sides are in a cold war and the factory is still open.”
“I see.”
“By the way, Agent J, there are two calls from the capital. One is from Guam Corporation. They say the acting CEO wants to talk to you. The second call is from Fuego Business Empire. Alexander Fuego wants to talk to Doctor Acinea.”
She came to a halt and turned to face Carlos. “Did Alexander Fuego say anything else?”
Carlos gave her a thoughtful glance. “He didn’t say anything else.” He shook his head. “Did Jobert use his political power to hide you from other influential clans?”
“No,” she said, shaking her head and smiling. “He’s just doing what he’s ordered to do.”
Her eyes narrowed as she put on the mask. “All right, let’s go to the next town,” she said as she walked out of the room. Carlos chased after her.Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.
She and Carlos entered the secret area inside Jobert’s room the other one night. She discovered a hundred lethal needles placed in a sealed clear box there. She took the poisonous needles box and inserted the fake lethal needles she had created inside.
They then exited the room. She bid goodbye to Jobert the next day because she was done treating his wife and the folks. However, she was notified that someone in the nearby province wished to seek assistance. Even though Jenica stated that she did not require money or land title, Jobert nonetheless granted her twenty hectares of land in the province’s north and one hundred million.
She refused the man’s offer, but Carlos accepted the box containing the check and land title. Jenica simply shook her head.
She has nothing to do with anything Jobert wants to do with his wife. She has already assisted the woman; now it is up to her to overcome her illness.
Jenica also notices that Jobert’s murdering intent against his wife is not as strong, possibly because she is still the daughter of an official in the capital so she is still useful in his eyes. It is up to the woman whether she wishes to exact revenge.
“You won’t respond to two competing corporations?” Carlos inquired.
Jenica simply shook her head and smiled as she exited the hotel. She will travel to the next province. She caressed the little package with the lethal needles hidden inside her sleeves.
Her joy was short-lived, however, when she noticed a mother and her toddler joyfully eating ice cream.
“Mom, when will Papa come home?” the child inquired of his mother.
The mother stroked the child’s head softly. “Next week, Sham. You must be a good boy when your Papa comes. When you are a good boy, you will have a kiss from me!”
The youngster smiled broadly. “Mama, you should kiss me on the cheeks! My classmate said that kissing on the cheeks gives good boy points!”
The mother shook her head and giggled.
“Agent J?” Carlos inquired.
Jenica regained her composure. She just realized she was stunned when she looked at the mother and child. “Let’s go,” she remarked as she walked into the parking lot.
But Carlos stopped her and pointed to her cheek. “You’re crying, Agent.”
She swiftly reclaimed her wrist and wiped her damp cheek. “It’s nothing. Let’s go,” she murmured as she went rapidly to her car.
“What’s wrong, Agent?” Carlos inquired. “Just tell me, I’ll listen—”
“That’s enough!” she said angrily at Carlos. “Don’t act like a friend, Agent C. You didn’t even know my name, so just shut the h*ll up!” she exclaimed as she climbed into her car and sped away.
As he watched the woman’s automobile pull away, Carlos was taken aback. That’s correct. Why did he cross the line if he isn’t friends with Agent J? He doesn’t even know what that girl’s name is, and yet he feels the need to talk to her?
What is he, a naive adolescent who has no idea what’s going on in the world?
“F*ck,” he grumbled, then hopped into his own automobile and chased down Agent J’s car.
Meanwhile, Jenica’s eyes remained crimson from suppressed tears. Then tears started pouring almost immediately. Despite her tears, she reached for the earpiece and put it on while holding the driving wheel with her other hand.
“Agent J,” the assistant said.
“No news about that stupid Nanny center?”
“As usual, Agent J. No other information about that person who disguised herself as a nanny. The head agent seems to notice that our side is searching for someone outside of mission. It won’t be long before he knows this.”
Her teeth clenched. “Stop digging that nanny’s information. I’ll take care of my matters.”
“But Agent J—”
“What? Your intelligence is useless so I’ll take care of my matters. Got it?”
“I’m sorry, Agent J.”
She took a deep breath and hung up the phone. She cursed a few times.
She used to believe she could do it all. She has the HQ to back her up and gather the information she requires for the task. But now that her assistant is practically helpless in her son’s kidnapping case, those feelings from years before resurface like tidal waves — hopelessness.
Perhaps she’s accustomed to receiving all of the information that provides her an advantage over the opposition in a single phone call. Perhaps she has become overly reliant on HQ and has forgotten that there are some things it cannot provide her with, such as independence.
The ability to stand on one’s own two feet. Because HQ absolutely prohibits doing things that are not in accordance with the mission, so she has the assistant secretly investigate the nanny who abducted Sham. If the top agent finds out, he will delegate this mission to someone else.
And she won’t let that happen, especially now that her first step toward finding her son is taking shape — her influence in the South is gradually growing.
Even so, she couldn’t help but be concerned about Sham. When she saw the child, who was the same age as her son and had the same name, the pain in her heart returned. She wished she hadn’t brought Sham to the country when she was on a mission.
It was entirely her fault!
“Sh*t!” she yelled repeatedly.
And because she was preoccupied, she didn’t notice the youngster crossing the street. When she almost ran over the young beggar, her heart stopped beating. Fortunately, she was able to stop the car in time.
She jumped out of the car and dashed towards the boy. “Are you all right?” she questioned instantly, checking the body for damage. But she’s not sure because his body is covered in dirt.
For a few moments, the boy was dumbfounded and just stared at her.
“Are you okay?” she inquired once again.
The youngster simply shook his head and began crying. She was ready to welcome him to the car to drive him to the hospital when she noticed the boy’s necklace.
Jenica’s eyes widened as she immediately untied the necklace from his neck. When he saw what she had in her possession, he yelled and grabbed the necklace before fleeing.
Jenica was surprised for a moment, and when she understood what had happened, she dashed after the young beggar. Sh*t!
She can’t possibly be mistaken. Sham wore that necklace! She make it a personalized necklace, so no one else in the world will have the same one!
It means only one thing. That boy is aware of her son’s whereabouts!
