Chapter 39
I was sure whoever called me to the office wasn't Grey. He was away on a business trip today, and there was no way he could retum soon. He had told me he would be away for a week. Could it be Ash? A men I took a deep breath and went to the office to find out. When I reached Grey's office, I knocked on the door before entering. When I opened the door, found Elizabeth Bradford inside, holding a document in her h Despite my shock, I kept my emotions to myself while maintaining a straight face. It had been almost a month since the last time I saw Elizabeth, and wondered why she called me.
"Good morning, Malam," I greeted her politely, the way an employee treats her superiors. Elizabeth didn't like me, and I didn't like her either, so that
us even. But had to be respectful to her because she was still my boss. And even if thated to say it, she was still my mother-
in-law.
Elizabeth said nothing. She didn't even offer me a seat it was nothing new, though. Foxpected her to treat me like that I was used to her cold shoulder.
Finally, she raised her head to me and smiled. The smile was cold and sinister and obviously fake. I know whatever news came out of her mouth would be bad news...
"Ms. De Silva," Elizabeth began in an icy tone. "I'm letting you know that this is your last day at the hotel. You're fired.
"I'm not leaving the hotel unless it's Grey himself who tells me I'm fired," I replied in the softest voice could muster while avoiding her gaze. The moment I saw her, I knew there was going to be trouble. My intuiti my life ift were in a fairytale, I would be Cinderella, and she would be the evil witch. It suited her in that
role, knowing how vicious she was,
As though she couldn't take my gaze any longer, Elizabeth looked away.
"you don't need to hear it from Grey, Ms. De Silva. I'm the officer in charge now, and I'm firing you" She cast a sharp glance in my direction before her Cyes returned to the document she was holding in her hand "You can't dismiss an employee without a valid reason. I can sue the company for it."
Elizabeth forced herself to look at me again. She pressed her lips tightly into a thin line and glared at me in exasperation "I know that. I have a valid reason to fire you," she informed me.
I wondered what reason she had come up with to find me. Knowing Elizabeth, she would do everything to get rid of me. She would play dirty just to get what she wanted.
"You've been absent for weeks now," she said, taking my attention back to her. "We're firing you on the grounds of absence without official leave
"I submitted a formal letter to the company stating that I'm taking an indefinite leave." Despite the panic building inside me, I kept my calm to show her! wasn't intimidated.
"Well, as of now, the management hasn't signed their approval on your letter. So that means you've been absent for too long, and the company could automatically end your contract." Elizabeth flashed me a triu "I will wait for Gray to return. I want to hear from his own lips that I'm fined. There was finality in my voice.
Elizabeth nonchalantly shrugged her shoulders. She gave me one of her smiles again. it was a smile that told me she was the winner this time. "You don't have to wait for him, Ms. De Silva. Greyson left me the Elizabeth confidently laid the document she was holding on top of the table and walled for me to take it.
There's no harm in checking the document to see it's fake or not, I told myself, and slowly picked the paper from the table, I read the document in less than a minute, and shock hit me hard when I finished. The The most shocking thing was that Grey had signed the dismissal letter.
The document wasn't fake. Grey's signature wasn't take either. I had seen and knew his signature by heart. I could recognize every stroke of his signature and instantly spot if it was forged, no matter how skille Feeling my legs would collapse on the floor if I didn't sit down, I slumped into the chair in front of the table, a hundred questions swirling inside my head.
Thad just lost Mom, lost a friend too, and now I was about to lose my job. The thought made my head spin. Without work, how was I supposed to pay my bills and expenses?
"Do you believe me now?" Elizabeth asked,
"W-
why would Grey fire me? He's the one who advised me to submit the letter. He knew why I had to take a long leave."
"Isn't it obvious, Lily?" For the first time since I got there, Elizabeth spoke my name. "Grey doesn't want you anymore, and he's making a
way to get rid of you. You're nothing to him. Why do you think he wanted a divorce? It was to get rid of you. If you weren't so stupid, you would realize he wanted y permanently out of his life."
you
Elizabeth's words were like a slap in the face.
At that moment, I felt like bursting into tears, but I clenched my fists and pushed the tears at bay. No, I would not cry in front of her and watch her laugh at me.
Slowly, lowered the document back onto
the table and finally rose from my seat. With a straightnoveldrama
face, I looked at her." don't know what you did to make Grey sign the papers, but I will not allow you to look down on
me, Elizabeth. You don't have to fire me. Ivoluntarily resign right at this moment."
I turned to the door but stopped in my tracks when I remembered something. "By the way, now that you've gotten rid of me, perhaps you should do the same to your husband's mistress. She's working here too. yourself."
Elizabeth jerked out of her seat and glared at me with daggers in her eyes. "You insolent bitch!" she screamed in fury.
Watching her reaction told me she already knew
her husband had a mistress, but she wasn't aware that I knew about the affair.
Instead of replying in the same furious manner, I gave her the sweetest smile I could muster before speaking again. "You've been in her shoes, Elizabeth. You were a mistress too before Grey's father married y "By the way, she's sexy, smart, and pretty. She's probably twice as good in bed as you."
Elizabeth's
face twisted into an ugly mask of rage. In return, I winked at her before marching to the door with my chin held high, as though nothing had happened.
Elizabeth was a bitch, but I just proved to her who was the bitchier one between the two of us. She had
made the wrong enemy out of me.
What do you think?
