KNIGHT
I was in the middle of the meeting at the firm when my assistant told me Uncle Lennox was on the phone, and it could not wait.
I instantly knew something was wrong. I already felt the knot in my stomach before that, and what was worse, I knew Nirvana must be terrified over something.
I picked up the office phone. “Uncle?”
“Call Kain now. It can’t wait.” He hung up, and I was still staring at the phone. At that moment, dread instantly filled my chest.
“Is everything okay?” Jada asked.
I looked at my boards. “My apology, but something came up. There’s an emergency at home. We’ll continue this meeting next month. I have to go.”
I didn’t wait for them to say another word. I walked out of the conference room. I was grateful I was in New York and Kain was working somewhere in the area.
I dialed his number, and he picked up as if waiting for my call. “Knight, we have a problem. She just called me. I can’t tell you the details. Where are you?”
“I’m still in my company building in Manhattan. What happened?” I shut my eyes closed briefly. “Don’t tell me anymore.” I couldn’t breathe. I pulled my tie loose and unbuttoned my shirt.
“Calm down. I’ll call you as soon as I have news. Get ready and take some clothes with you for a few days. And Zarah might call you.”
“Right. I’ll be out soon.”
“Can I help you, Mr. Blackwell?”
“Jada, cancel all my meetings. Free my schedule for a week. I have to go.” I grabbed my bag and left my office.
I found McKaye and Luka still waiting in the parking lot. “Let’s go. She’s in trouble.”
“What happened?” McKaye quickly asked.
“I don’t know. Kain called me but couldn’t tell me over the phone.”
“Someone is calling me,” he said as he picked up the call. “Hello?”
“Put Knight on the phone.”
“It’s for you.” He gave it to me. He didn’t have to tell me who because I can hear her voice.
“What the fuck happened? I thought she was safe with you.”
“She was, but someone powerful enough wanted to get inside the house using powerful magic. It triggered the shield around the house and caused a massive earthquake.” Her terrible news tagged the broken strings of my heart.
“A massive earthquake? How massive are we talking about, Zarah?”
“As massive as could trigger a Tsunami.”
“What the fuck? Where is she now?”
“Kain is going to get her. Go to the compound and meet me there. I managed to go to the house and grabbed her things.”
My heart clenched. “I don’t care what she has there. I want to know if she’s okay.”
“She’s terrified, but she will be okay if she sees you, and Kain will take care of her. You have to go somewhere you haven’t been before. Don’t use the car you’re using right now, and if you can disguise yourself, that would be better.”
“We’re on the way. So, she found her?”
“No, but they suspect she’s with me.”
“It’s your boss who told them. I’m fucking sure of that.”
“No. Margaret has to accept the offer so no one would suspect what we’ve been working on, but she has to do something to prove she’s on their side. Anyway, I have to go. We’ll meet soon.” She hung up the call.
“Fuck.” The phone almost broke in my grip.
“She must be so terrified alone,” Luka said.
I let out a slow breath. “I failed her in so many ways. I failed to protect her as her mate. I don’t deserve her anymore.”
“That’s bullshit, Alpha. You sacrifice something that a mate could never do. You let her go with Zarah to protect her, even if you knew your wolf would suffer. No one could do that, and I admire you for being strong for her to keep our Luna safe.”
“I agree with Luka,” McKaye said. “You two shouldn’t be suffering like this. Who should pay for what you’ve been through are those assholes who are coming after her. I wouldn’t mind killing them. They came to us first.”Property of Nô)(velDr(a)ma.Org.
“Save your strength, Mac. We have a bigger and more powerful enemy to deal with.”
After an hour, we arrived at the compound.
Califf met us in the parking lot. “We’ll have a long conversation over a whiskey, but not today. Here’s the key. The car’s full tank and the kitchen had prepared some food and packed some groceries that would last a few days. Some clothes and toiletries are there. I got a few bills for you.”
“I’ll pay you back.”
He chuckled. “Save it, Knight. Go and see your mate. They’ll be arriving soon. Her things are in the backseat. Zarah told me it’s very important. Be careful out there, and Calder wrote a direction in this paper.” I got why Calder wrote the directions. Old Kain owned the place.
I grabbed the paper from him. “Thank you.”
“I’ll take care of these guys. You can change clothes in the car. They’re in the front seat. Don’t waste time, Knight. She’s alone out there.”
“See you soon, Alpha. Tell Luna we say hi.”
I looked at McKaye and Luke before I got in the car and removed my clothes. I put on the T-shirt, the leather jacket, and the baseball cap, started the car, and left the compound.
The two-hour drive to the woods seemed like an eternity. I wanted to see my mate, Goddess. I wanted to hold her, tell her that she was not alone anymore.
When the small cabin finally appeared, my chest filled with hope. I parked the car beside the cabin. My knees somehow weakened, and my hand trembled with anticipation.
I fucking missed her, and I couldn’t wait to hold her in my arms again. And there she was standing before me, and she looked like she was crying, and her eyes were so distrustful.
I stared at her in disbelief.
“That’s exactly what someone glamoured as Knight would say.”
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” My anticipation of kissing her dried off. “It’s me, Nirvana.”
“Prove it then.” Her stubbornness made me proud of her.
“What do you want? How can I prove to you that I am who I am, huh?”
“You said in your letter that we should not meet.”
“I didn’t write something like that.” My breathing turned unsteady as anger instantly filled my chest.
“You also said that we should not talk over the phone.”
I snorted. “I’m sure it did not come from me, Nirvana. Zarah might have said that, but not me. And what do you call what we’ve been doing for the last three days? We’ve talked over the phone for hours, and we almost had phone sex.” I watched her cheeks flush red. “Huh? How would I know that if I’m not who I am? And one thing I don’t know about you is your birthday.”
“Asshole.”
“Yeah, about that. Your ass is still a virgin.”
When her eyes narrowed, I laughed. “So, can I come in now before someone sees us? And I have a few things in the car.”
“You’re a dick.”
“You’ll have my dick later. I’ll make sure of that.” I went to take the things in the car as she opened the door wide.
“I’m not gonna help.”
“It’s fine. Just get naked. I suppose there’s a bed for us?”
“Just go and bring whatever you have.” She left and went inside.
I took her things from the backseat, then some plastic bags of groceries. Once I was done, I locked the door and removed my shoes and jacket.
I found her standing at the door of what must be a small bedroom. “Hey.”
She cupped my face and looked at me in the eye. “It’s really you.”
“I fucking missed you, sweetheart.” I smashed my lips against hers and kissed her hard. It was filled with desperation and longing- the kind of kiss I felt right now, pouring my heart out to her.
There was no hint of hesitation as she kissed me back, as if she badly and desperately needed this kiss, like it was her lifeline, like I was her air, and so she was to me.
We only broke the kiss to take our clothes off, and then she went, working on my belt, unbuttoning my pants, and dragging them with boxers down to my knees.
“Get naked. I only tell you this once.”
“You said it already,” she said confidently, unhooking her bra.
“Stop talking. I want to be inside you in five seconds, or I might shift in this small room.” I went on my knees to get rid of her jeans. It was a good thing she was not wearing her shoes.
“Shit. Knight, I have something to tell you first.”
