Chapter 44 The Child is Dead

“Queenie.”

Christopher grabbed hold of Queenie’s enfeebled body in his arms as he turned around.

At this point, Diane was also in shock as she locked her gaze onto Queenie’s blood-stained waist while

standing in absolute dismay.

Meanwhile, upon failing her attempts, Elizabeth struggled in the police’s captives to pounce on Diane

with her hollers sounding, “Diane, how dare you! You’ve sabotaged my son and now you’ve killed my

grandchild! I’m not done with you. Do you hear me! I’m gonna kill you! I will kill you!”

Killed her grandchild? As Diane stared at her gloomy mourning sables, her brain went blank for a

moment as she slowly came to realize the meaning behind those words.

Stella’s child is dead? So, something really did happen to her on that day and her child did not make it?

Diane’s pondering thoughts paused while Christopher lifted Queenie who went fully unconscious into

his arms.

It was without a doubt that the incident minutes ago was due to Elizabeth initially wanting to stab Diane.

However, because she was standing close to Christopher, Queenie couldn’t help but get worried, so

she attempted to protect him from the attack by taking the stab instead.

“Scott, I’ll leave the rest to you.”

Christopher had not time to lose as he anxiously carried Queenie out from the place. Diane wanted to

follow, but the policemen insisted to have her follow them instead to assist in the post-investigations.

She knew she had no choice but to comply considering that she was one of the main causes of the

conflict. Nodding her head, she chose to go with Scott and the policemen to the police station.

By the time they filled out their statements of the investigations, it was already past noon. After having

a brief phone call with Christopher, Scott asked Diane, “Mr. Wayne is still in the hospital. Do you wish to

go home or to the hospital?”

“How’s Miss Hayworth?” she asked. Up until now, flashbacks of Queenie protecting Christopher from

the stabbing kept replaying in her head.

“Mr. Wayne said that she’s temporarily out of danger, but she had to remain under close observation as

she lost a lot of blood,” Scott frowned as he spoke. Diane felt like her heart sunken a little. “Then, let’s

go to the hospital.”

They both then drove to the hospital.

In the hospital, Queenie’s surgery had completed and she had been transferred to the VIP room. When

they arrived, the room was quiet; there were no doctors or nurses. There was only Christopher sitting

by the ward bed, accompanying Queenie.

Standing by the door, Diane just couldn’t bear to set her footsteps in the room. She saw Christopher

sitting there with not a single muscle moved, staring at Queenie. Even with his backs against her, she

could still imagine how focused his gaze was at Queenie.

There was it again—the feeling of not belonging. The ambience in the room was too peaceful and

lovely that compelled her to think that she should not be here right now.

Indifferently, a slight of discomfort and upset conjured from the bottom of her heart. It was like that day

when her feelings were affected after she heard those words from Queenie. And now, she failed to

control them again either.

What is wrong with me? Why do I have to care about the things between Christopher and Queenie?

“Mrs. Wayne, are you not entering?” Scott’s sudden reminder interrupted Diane’s introspection, and

alerted Christopher to turn his head around as well.

“Mr. Wayne,” Scott addressed. Diane then quickly gathered her thoughts, before gradually walking

towards them. “How’s Miss Hayworth? Is everything alright?”

“Not quite well. The cut slashed her aorta, so she’d lose a lot of blood. Also…” With a gloomy, sullen

look on his face, Christopher fixed his gaze on Queenie’s pale face as he articulated the situation.

Although there was not much distress expressions appearing, that was the first time Diane witnessed

an ominous emotion conjuring up on his expressions.

As she waited for his sentences to finish, he suddenly stopped.

“Are there any updates on the situation at the company?” Just then, Christopher changed the topic as

he turned his face aside, facing Scott.

Scott immediately replied, “Elizabeth was arrested. With her deeply injuring Miss Hayworth, I bet she’s

not only going to face jail time simply in the detention cell. I couldn’t believe that she actually had a

knife hidden on her. I thought she only wanted money!”

Scott lamented while Christopher’s face gradually warped into miserable black. “Her grandchild’s dead,

and her son is also in jail, so at this point, she had nothing to lose and she’s not going to stop trying. Go

and check on her, and make sure she doesn’t get out, or otherwise we will be in great danger again.”

“Understood. You can be rest assured, Mr. Wayne.” Scott responded, then glanced at the ward bed.

“Do you need me to hire two more caregivers to take care of Miss Hayworth?”

“Sure,” Christopher said, to which Scott responded briefly before leaving.

Once again, the atmosphere in the ward went silence. Diane stood there, feeling slightly awkward. She

thought for an instance then suggested, “How about I take care of Miss Hayworth for a few days? Since

I have a lot of my time on my hands now.”

“There’s no need for that,” Christopher rejected instantly. As he looked at Diane, his ominous

demeanor reduced a little. “You should go home first.”

Diane hesitated, but she resisted her sudden urge of saying something as she saw the look on Content © NôvelDrama.Org 2024.

Christopher’s face when he gazed upon Queenie. After standing for a while, she then responded with a

moody tone, “Okay, I’ll leave first. If you need anything, just give me a call. Also, please apologize to

Miss Hayworth for me when she wakes up. What happened today was all because of me.”

Hearing this, Christopher turned around and stared at her for brief seconds. The temperature of his

gaze rose and became warm just like blocks of ice melted into small puddles. “It’s fine. Go home first.

I’ll return when I’m done with work.”

Somehow, his words warmed Diane’s heart by quite a bit.

As she turned around and walked away, Christopher watched her delicate, small back. There was a

complicated mixture of concealed, dazed, and a hint of sorrow in the depths of his gaze. But these

mixed emotions were nowhere to be seen by Diane.

Upon leaving the hospital, Diane finally got the time to get her head to think of something else rather

than the messed-up and overwhelming emotions she had been dealing with since the incident.

Instead of heading right back home, she decided to go to Stella’s parents’ home.

According to Elizabeth, the child was dead. Many days had also passed, so Stella should also be

discharged by now even if she got to proceed to give birth to her child. Since no one was in the Adler

residence to serve her, it was assumed that Stella must be at her parents’ house.

Even though Diane had never been there before, she had heard of the place from Stella. It was in the

residence specifically provided to employees and their families by her dad’s workplace. Without

knowing the lot number, the exact location was searchable in places like that simply by asking people

around there.

Until now, she was in ultimate disbelief in the accusation of her causing the miscarriage of Stella’s baby

over some silly quarrels. The baby was near to its full maturation period, so how can it be easily dead?

Thinking of that, she finally arrived the place after an hour. To her expectations, she managed to get the

exact address of Stella’s house after asking for it from two passersby.

With a knock on the door, somebody answered the door right away.

“Who was it?” a middle-aged lady asked as she opened the door promptly.

From her features, Diane immediately knew that it was none other than Stella’s mum. After all, they

looked quite similar.

“Hi, excuse me. Is Stella at home? I’m her friend and I’m here to visit her.”

“You’re Stella’s friend?” Mrs. Mayfair scanned her from head to toe. Considering the fact that Diane

was a girl, and most importantly, a seemingly innocent one, she did not have many concerns.

“Yes. She’s in her room.” Mrs. Mayfair invited Diane in, to which Diane responded with a smile and

entered.

“Stella, your friend is here to see you!” Mrs. Mayfair called for her daughter at the last room in the row.

Then, she simply pointed the room and asserted Diane to head there. “That’s the one. You can go in by

yourself.”

“Thank you.” With that, Diane squeezed out a kind smile and went inside to Stella’s room.
